Luas & Cycling

Luas encourages the integrated use of bicycles and trams in Dublin. Integrated bicycle and tram journeys are a convenient, fast and sustainable way to travel around Dublin. They also have added benefits for your health and well-being.

Combine cycling and Luas by cycling to a Luas stop, locking your bicycle to a bicycle rack and hopping on a tram to complete your journey.

Luas Bike Parking

Luas offers free cycle racks at more than two-thirds of its stops, so you can lock up your bike securely nearby. There are currently 320 racks across the network, each holding 2 bikes : that's 640 parking spaces in total, split between 270 on the Red Line and 370 on the Green Line.

You can park your bike at the following stops:

Green Line

There are also 10 bicycle lockers located at Dundrum Cycle & Ride Facility on the Luas Green Line. This facility has a weather shelter and is open 24/7. For information about renting a Bike Locker, consult the Bike Locker website.

Red Line

To avoid causing issues for other Luas passengers, especially those with disabilities, please only use the dedicated bike racks provided.

Carriage of Folded Bicycles

Folded bicycles, in their protective carry case or bag, are carried free of charge on Luas trams.

Cyclists should adhere to the following restrictions and guidelines in relation to carriage of folded bicycles;

• Folded bicycles must be in a protective carrying case or bag
• Passengers with folded bicycles must not obstruct doors
• Passengers with folded bicycles must not obstruct aisles
• Passengers with folded bicycles must stay with their folded bicycle at all times
• Folded bicycles are carried at your own risk.

In the event of service disruption or maintenance works affection Luas services, folding bicycles are usually accepted on Luas operated replacement bus services if fully folded, in case or bag and stowed as luggage, subject to space being available.

Why can't I bring my bicycle on the Luas?

Unfortunately, Luas does not permit the carriage of bicycles on trams (folding bikes are the exception). There are two main reasons for this.

1. Space is limited. Our trams get busy, and every bit of space matters, especially for passengers travelling with pushchairs or wheelchair users. You might wonder why bicycles are not allowed even during off-peak hours, but the truth is, our trams don't really have a quiet time. We carry large crowds late in the evening for concerts and events, and weekends get just as busy with major sporting fixtures.
2. Safety comes first. There is simply no space on board to secure a bicycle safely. If the tram were to stop suddenly or pull away from a station, an unsecured bike could fall and injure other passengers. We haven't installed bike racks on board for the same reason : it would take up space we need to keep everyone travelling safely and comfortably.
